Cataract Surgery in Ranchi
Modern, micro-incision cataract surgery with premium lens implants by Dr. Dibya Prabha, MS Ophthalmology, FICO, at Neurovision Clinic, Ranchi.
What is Cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural crystalline lens that lies behind the iris and pupil. The lens works like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye. When it becomes cloudy, light cannot pass through clearly, resulting in blurred or dim vision — similar to looking through a fogged-up window. Cataracts develop slowly as part of the normal aging process (most people over 60 have some degree of cataract), but they can also develop due to diabetes, eye injury, prolonged steroid use, or excessive UV light exposure. Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery worldwide and one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures, with over 98% success rate.
Symptoms of Cataract
- •Cloudy, blurry, or dim vision that glasses cannot fully correct
- •Increased difficulty seeing at night, especially while driving
- •Sensitivity to light and glare — headlights, lamps, or sunlight may seem too bright
- •Seeing halos around lights
- •Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription
- •Fading or yellowing of colors — whites may appear yellowish
- •Double vision in one eye
- •Needing brighter light for reading and other close activities
Causes & Risk Factors
- •Aging — the most common cause; protein in the lens clumps together over time
- •Diabetes — high blood sugar can cause earlier and faster cataract development
- •Prolonged exposure to UV radiation from sunlight
- •Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
- •Previous eye injury or eye surgery
- •Long-term use of corticosteroid medications
- •Family history of early cataracts
- •High blood pressure and obesity
Diagnostic Tests
Comprehensive Eye Examination
Full evaluation including visual acuity, slit-lamp examination of the lens, and dilated retinal examination.
OCT Scan
Macular OCT to ensure the retina is healthy before cataract surgery and to predict visual outcome.
Fundus Photography
Detailed retinal imaging to document retinal health before surgery and identify any co-existing conditions.
Treatment Approach
Dr. Dibya Prabha at Neurovision Clinic performs modern, state-of-the-art cataract surgery:
Pre-operative Assessment
Thorough eye examination, biometry (eye measurements), and discussion of IOL options. Your specific visual needs — distance, reading, or both — guide IOL selection.
Phacoemulsification Surgery
A tiny incision (2.2-2.8mm) is made in the cornea. Ultrasound energy gently breaks up the cloudy lens which is then removed. A foldable artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted through the same micro-incision. No stitches are needed and the incision self-seals.
Premium IOL Options
Monofocal IOLs provide clear vision at one distance. Multifocal and EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus) IOLs reduce dependence on glasses for both near and distance. Toric IOLs correct astigmatism. Dr. Prabha helps you choose based on your lifestyle and visual goals.
Post-operative Care
Structured follow-up schedule (typically day 1, week 1, month 1) to monitor healing. Medicated eye drops prevent infection and inflammation. Most patients resume normal activities within a few days with some precautions.
